Uncle Kenny: A Student's Dream comes True...

Updated: Oct 3, 2024

10 years ago, Uncle Kenny started learning guitar from the RC group lessons. Though he was provided with good learning materials and received valuable guidance from our instructors, the difficulties with playing and note reading, coupled with the group setting, were simply too much. He eventually left in pursuit of the ukulele and other guitar learning alternatives.

Starting out at the residents committee centre

Years passed and upon realizing he was not improving, he made a comeback and returned to where he originally began; except this time, learning directly from me.

The road to success was a tough one. I needed to reintroduce proper techniques and help him overcome numerous bad habits (which held him back for years).

Last week was particularly special - as we were practicing, my heart felt a sense of warmth when we played and recorded “Romance de Amore”; knowing he has finally achieved what he set out for all those years ago.

Like any endeavor worth pursuing, the guitar journey is not always a smooth one. Along the way, we were met with setbacks and difficulties but as we remained passionate, kept an open mind and established a practice routine - anything is possible with the right attitude :)

Consistency and perseverance were key and lessons were held even during the COVID-19 pandemic. Uncle Kenny became more observant of the right hand positions, finger-styles and even proper nails maintenance!

TLDR; It’s never too late to learn the guitar!
